Fritz Boyden Youth Fishing Lands Another Successful Year

For 46 years, this children's pier fishing tournament has been going on. Here is an article written by Russ Lay for the Outer Banks Voice about this year's tournament which was just held. It's something to mark on your calendar for next year if you have children.

Close to 200 young anglers descended on three Outer Banks fishing piers June 15 to compete in the 46th Annual Fritz Boyden Youth Tournament.

The tournament is put on by the Nags Head Surf Fishing Club, the North Carolina Beach Buggy Association, the N.C. Sea Hags surf fishing team and the Outer Banks Anglers Club. The tournament is free and includes access to the pier, a T-shirt, lunch at the Awards Ceremony and a chance to win one of many door prizes.

This year, the action took place on three piers; Avalon, Nags Head, and Outer Banks piers hosted the 187 contestants. Jennette’s Pier, which usually participates, was not used this year because work was being done on the pier’s signature wind turbines.

The weather was outstanding with moderate temperatures and clear waters.

Spadefish and trigger fish were abundant, resulting in a significant number of landings and releases during the four-hour session.

The competitors are divided into two age groups; 4 to 9 year olds and 10 to 16 year olds, with awards for the largest fish caught in each eligible species.

Awards are also given to the largest fish caught by a male or female angler in each age group, regardless of species, and special awards are given for exemplary, outstanding or unusual fish.

Finally, an Overall Winner award is given to the largest fish, regardless of age or gender.

The big winners in the 4- to 9-year-old category were Harper Burd, who took the largest fish caught by a female with a spadefish landed at Nags Head Pier, while Ethan Jenson grabbed the male honors, landing a Spanish mackerel at the Outer Banks Pier.

Jenson was also the Overall Winner with his landing of the Spanish mackerel.

In the 10- to 16-year-old age group, CeeCee Donahue grabbed the female honors, taking a bluefish at the Nags Head pier, while two males tied for largest fish with Jack Piddington’s flounder caught at Avalon Pier, equal in length to Christian Graham’s bluefish caught at the Nags Head pier.

Besides trophies, winners scored rods and reels, and contestants and largest fish winners were also awarded a tackle box.

Contestants and family members were treated to hot dogs, sodas, water, chips and snacks. David Thompson, who works for Sysco, arranged the donation of 400 hot dogs, buns, condiments and napkins for the Awards Ceremony.

The ceremony took place under the trees abutting the Kelly’s Restaurant parking lot. Mike Kelly donated the use of the lot, opened the inside for restrooms and escape from the heat and staff who furnished tables, tablecloths, chafing dishes and set out trash containers.

Tournament Director Tony Garrett also thanked TW’s Bait and Tackle for the rods and reels; Will Thorpe of High Cotton for the use of the large grill used to cook the hot dogs; The Fishin’ Hole in Salvo, which donated waders for kids, which were given away as door prizes; Maryann Maryott, who furnished sodas, water and cookies; Faith Spivey for taking pictures on the piers and placing them on the tournament’s Facebook page; Keith and Arron Jones for cooking the hot dogs; Pat Cahill for serving as Master of Ceremonies; Allison Rucker for her work on the trophies and Tom Gilliam for placing posters up and down the beach at various business locales urging kids to register.

Other volunteers recognized included Kearns Lowman, head judge, and pier captains Carol Mowers (Avalon Pier, North Carolina Beach Buggy Association), Rose Lay (Nags Head Pier, Nags Head Surf Fishing Club), Jon Worthington (Jennette’s Pier, moved to Nags Head Pier, Outer Banks Anglers Club) and Kutchie Scott (Outer Banks Pier, Nags Head Surf Fishing Club.)

Garrett thanked the owners and managers of the three piers for donating free access and accommodating the anglers. The piers are the key to entire tournament’s success.
